The Cause Of Crime Today Essay -- essays research papers
The world is not the way it was. At one time people could sleep with their windows up and doors unlocked. In today's society people have to lock their doors and close their windows. Crime is at an ultimate high, and the world is slowly falling apart. This is not the work of the older generations, it is strictly the work of generation X. à à à à à Teenagers are not what they use to be. A long time ago teenagers were loyal, respectful, and helpful to their parents, but not anymore. Today's teens live their own lives. Individualââ¬â¢s knowledge of cats Essay
An individualââ¬â¢s knowledge about cats may come from many different places. The basics for someoneââ¬â¢s knowledge about cats may have started when they were a child. If they had a bad experience with a cat then they might claim to ââ¬Å"knowâ⬠that all cats are mean. This could make them believe that cats are mean even though they only had one experience. If they had a cat of their own and loved it very much then they might claim to ââ¬Å"knowâ⬠that cats are lovable creatures. Another example of us constructing our knowledge of cats is by how we choose our religion. If I decide to worship cats then to me I ââ¬Å"knowâ⬠that cats are holy. This also brings up the debate that religion is not only a personal choice but also a type of definition. If my religion tells me that cats are holy then that is acquired knowledge and then I am simply recognizing it to be knowledge. Other definitions about cats are scientific experiments that people on them. If cats are proven to have a certain disease then people could say the cats carry disease and be making a valid knowledge claim. This shows that knowledge about cats is neither totally constructed by us nor completely acquired. You can never know everything about cats because experiences, new discoveries, and different emotions can cause you to ââ¬Å"knowâ⬠something new about them. It shows that depending on the experiences we have and how we perceive information can affect what we think we know about cats. What I know about cats maybe be different from someone else. This is not necessarily because I know more or less than someone else does but I might have a different perception of the cats than someone else does. Sometimes people have a bad experience once and then use that experience to block out any other knowledge. No matter how irrational that may be, people can convince themselves that because they had a bad experience, it means all cats are bad. When this happens, people can forget to look at all the ways of knowing something. They could stop believing in their religion or deny scientifically proven facts. In this regard we choose what our knowledge is, even if there is more information that could be considered. It also works in the opposite direction. People could choose to be completely scientific about cats and block out any knowledge having to do with emotion or experiences having to do with cats. Either of these ways of thinking changes what people think they know but it also shows how by talking to someone about cats does not necessarily give you facts about cats. It only gives you the perception of cats from the other person. Unfortunately, most information about cats comes from either something people have written or from inside someoneââ¬â¢s head. Therefor it is up to us to decide what we believe to be knowledge and what to be opinion.

The Cost of Love in The Story of an Hourââ¬Â by Kate Chopin...
Do you think you would be happy when you have a person or thing that you could love? Do you want the person whom you love give back the same love to you? Love and loss are intimately associated. When you are love with someone or something, you may not be concerned that you may have lost another person or thing in the same time. As in the stories, ââ¬Å"The Story of an Hourâ⬠by Kate Chopin and ââ¬Å"The Beast in the Jungleâ⬠by Henry James, the two authors portrayed different kinds of love of two women, but after they found their love, they also suffered to face tremendous loss in their lives. These stories seemed to be written in a same period, but the two authorââ¬â¢s attitudes of the love were totally different. Love was a personal attitude; loss was the value which the person thought that was worth to pay the love, and that might be influenced by cultures. One woman gained love from her husbandââ¬â¢s death, and another woman devoted herself to wait for her love. In ââ¬Å"The Story of an Hour,â⬠Louise Mallard grieved deeply for her husband death by a train accident, but immediately she recognized that she gained her love which was freedom. The Issue Of Sex Trafficking - 2713 Words
On the news, or on the radio, or in the newspaper we sometimes hear horrible news, like the death of 20 children and 6 adults, in Sandy Hook Elementary School, for example. The news of a man killing so many innocent people are hard to believe in or even imagine. However, what if I say that around 30 millions of people around the world are dying too. They are not dying from bullets, but their bodies and souls are dying from oppression of other humans because these people are in slavery. Modern slavery, just like any other slavery throughout our history, kills dreams, hopes, potentials, and lives of millions of people. Today, there are many different kinds of slavery. One of them is sex trafficking, which is a profitable business to peopleâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Most of the participants believe that the actual number of people who are trafficked worldwide is 95 percent lower than the actual number (Kalashnikau). Everyone agreed that sex trafficking or any other type of human tra fficking is slavery, but not everyone fully understands that it is happening in the world they live in and in their own countries too. Trafficking is one of the main six types of slavery in todayââ¬â¢s world. The main difference of it from other kinds is that it is a transportation of people into new regions, cities, and countries for a purpose of forcing them to work against their own will (ââ¬Å"Anti-slaveryâ⬠). Human trafficking has a lot of different kinds of people for different purposes. Men and boys usually trafficked into hard labor jobs or some agricultural work, while women and girls trafficked into sex industry, like prostitution and other sexual exploitations (ââ¬Å"Soroptimistâ⬠). Sex trafficking is a big problem that shouldnââ¬â¢t be forgotten because 79% of all human trafficking is sexual exploitation (Sandeep, Le Pichon, and Me 6). According to U.S. Department of Justice, there are 1.4 million people in the U.S. who were the victims of sex trafficking. Violence on Video Games free essay sample
There has been plenty of research on whether or not violent video games cause aggression in the real world. Famously, we have lawyer Jack Thompson who claimed games like Grand Theft Auto and Mortal Kombat were causing children to attack one another. His claims were met with a moral panic that culminated like all other moral panics ? lotââ¬â¢s of hysteria. Thompsonââ¬â¢s claims didnââ¬â¢t really get him anywhere but his claim lingered: do violent video games cause violence? Many would be inclined to say yes despite evidence to the contrary. Reality is much more complicated than looking at two things in a vacuum and deciding they are causally related to one another. The video above from Psych2Go looks at the relationship between video game violence and real life aggression. The majority of studies seem to find that aggression and violent video games are linked, but these studies were not conducted under objective conditions and only measured short term effects. If youââ¬â¢re worried about exposure to violence only in video games, youââ¬â¢re turning a blind eye to violence elsewhere. Look around, violent video games are nothing compared to the violence we consume in our daily news media.

Management vs. Leadership free essay sample
Management vs. Leadership Management and leadership functions are definitely not one and the same, although they are unavoidably linked together hand and hand. Evidently, it is clear to note that they overlap and compliment one another. Having one without the other no doubt will cause more problems than it solves. Yet the two indefinitely have their major differences. To start, a manager manages tasks and systems, while a leader leads and inspires people. ââ¬Å"The managerââ¬â¢s job is to plan, organize and coordinate. The leaderââ¬â¢s job is to inspire and motivate. (Murray, 2010). Management Management as a concept was developed in the last 100 years partly due to the booming industrial revolution. ââ¬Å"The definition of management is to exercise executive, administrative, and supervisory direction of a group or organization. â⬠(Ricketts, 2009). Management goals are to accomplish tasks and master routines. Different personal levels of skillsets ââ¬â technical, hu man and conceptual ââ¬â are key to achieving effective management. We will write a custom essay sample on Management vs. Leadership or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Technical skills are obviously necessary to be proficient and comprehensive. Human skills, also called people skills, are necessary to broaden the managerââ¬â¢s perceptiveness and awareness to the group or organization. Lastly, conceptual skills are required to bring focus on ideas and innovations. Each of these skills is part of the formula for effective management. As a manager, producing order and consistency is automatically expected. Planning, budgeting, staffing, establishing rules and procedures are some of the responsibilities managers face. In a management role, detailed steps and timetables to achieve results are established. The human network a manager would develop would be based on organization and staffing, delegating responsibility and authority to carrying out a plan, providing policies and procedures to guide people, and constructing systems to monitor implementation. Ultimately, a manager would create a certain degree of predictability and order. Leadership Leadership is an age-old concept that has been ongoing for centuries. It is complex and compelling and can be defined as ââ¬Å"a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. (Ricketts, 2009) Additionally, leaders are expected to venture out and challenge their current process. It is critical for leaders to constantly search for ways to improve and take initiatives. Thus, enabling others to act, while encouraging partnerships and building trust. This process of improvement can be quite challenging. It is easy for people to become disheartened and to give up, which is why model leaders understand the importance to genuinely strengthen and encourage the heart and spirit of their unit. The leadership process involves establishing a common direction, a future vision, and strategies to achieve that vision. The human network a leader would develop would be based on aligning people, thus creating a team that shares the same goal and agree on the same strategies. To execute their plans, leaders motivate and inspire others to overcome obstacles. In time, leaders will successfully produce the much desired change and meet the unitââ¬â¢s shared goal. Similarities, Differences and Overlap There are as many similarities between management and leadership as there are differences. Both roles influence others, both work with people and society, both help to establish their surrounding moral climate and culture, and both work towards effectively managing a goal. Yet there are plenty of differences that show the two are distinct from one another. While the manager administers, the leader innovates; one maintains, while the other develops. Managers focus on systems, structure and routine, while leaders focus on people. One controls, while the other inspires trust; one accepts the status quo and does things right, while the other challenges the status quo and does the right thing. Murray, 2010). Nevertheless, both these roles overlap and should not be separated. Like leaders, managers also have the ability to influence a group of individuals to meet their shared goals. Management combined with leadership can help achieve a planned systematic change. These instances describe a manager operating under leadership. On the opposite end, when leaders participate in plann ing, organizing, and staffing, they are operating within management. (Murray, 2010). Leadership combined with management can keep groups and organizations appropriately aligned with its environment. Today we are in a new economy, where the ultimate value lies in our knowledge workers; where management and leadership can no longer be separated in both analysis and practice. In the words of social ecologist, Peter Drucker, with the rise of the knowledge worker, ââ¬Å"one does not ââ¬Ëmanageââ¬â¢ peopleâ⬠¦ The task is to lead people. And the goal is to make productive the specific strengths and knowledge of every individual. â⬠(Murray, 2010). Managers today are not just expected to assign a task, but also to define a purpose. They are not just expected to organize staffing and maximize efficiency, but also to nurture skills, encourage innovation, and inspire results. Managers are expected to become leaders. In conclusion, both management and leadership functions must be connected in order to maximize its effectiveness. As U. S. Navy Admiral, Grace Hopper, pointed out, ââ¬Å"you cannot manage men into battle. You manage things; you lead people. â⬠(1986). ââ¬Å"With the mastery of each of these skills and behaviors, one can successfully navigate the fields of both management and leadership.
