The Cost of Love in The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin...

Do you think you would be happy when you have a person or thing that you could love? Do you want the person whom you love give back the same love to you? Love and loss are intimately associated. When you are love with someone or something, you may not be concerned that you may have lost another person or thing in the same time. As in the stories, â€Å"The Story of an Hour† by Kate Chopin and â€Å"The Beast in the Jungle† by Henry James, the two authors portrayed different kinds of love of two women, but after they found their love, they also suffered to face tremendous loss in their lives. These stories seemed to be written in a same period, but the two author’s attitudes of the love were totally different. Love was a personal attitude; loss was the value which the person thought that was worth to pay the love, and that might be influenced by cultures. One woman gained love from her husband’s death, and another woman devoted herself to wait for her love. In â€Å"The Story of an Hour,† Louise Mallard grieved deeply for her husband death by a train accident, but immediately she recognized that she gained her love which was freedom. May Bartram, the main character in â€Å"The Beast in the Jungle,† gave her whole life to waited for John Marcher whom she loved. Comparing these two women, Louise had a husband that she loved and loved her, but she did not enjoy the love until he died. May loved John, but until she died she never received the love from him. On the news, or on the radio, or in the newspaper we sometimes hear horrible news, like the death of 20 children and 6 adults, in Sandy Hook Elementary School, for example. The news of a man killing so many innocent people are hard to believe in or even imagine. However, what if I say that around 30 millions of people around the world are dying too. They are not dying from bullets, but their bodies and souls are dying from oppression of other humans because these people are in slavery. Modern slavery, just like any other slavery throughout our history, kills dreams, hopes, potentials, and lives of millions of people. Today, there are many different kinds of slavery. Everyone agreed that sex trafficking or any other type of human tra fficking is slavery, but not everyone fully understands that it is happening in the world they live in and in their own countries too. Trafficking is one of the main six types of slavery in today’s world. The main difference of it from other kinds is that it is a transportation of people into new regions, cities, and countries for a purpose of forcing them to work against their own will (â€Å"Anti-slavery†). Human trafficking has a lot of different kinds of people for different purposes. Men and boys usually trafficked into hard labor jobs or some agricultural work, while women and girls trafficked into sex industry, like prostitution and other sexual exploitations (â€Å"Soroptimist†). Sex trafficking is a big problem that shouldn’t be forgotten because 79% of all human trafficking is sexual exploitation (Sandeep, Le Pichon, and Me 6). More than 2.5 million of people became the victims of sex trafficking, worldwide. Violence on Video Games free essay sample

There has been plenty of research on whether or not violent video games cause aggression in the real world. It is easy for people to become disheartened and to give up, which is why model leaders understand the importance to genuinely strengthen and encourage the heart and spirit of their unit. The leadership process involves establishing a common direction, a future vision, and strategies to achieve that vision. The human network a leader would develop would be based on aligning people, thus creating a team that shares the same goal and agree on the same strategies. To execute their plans, leaders motivate and inspire others to overcome obstacles. In time, leaders will successfully produce the much desired change and meet the unit’s shared goal. Similarities, Differences and Overlap There are as many similarities between management and leadership as there are differences. Both roles influence others, both work with people and society, both help to establish their surrounding moral climate and culture, and both work towards effectively managing a goal. Yet there are plenty of differences that show the two are distinct from one another. While the manager administers, the leader innovates; one maintains, while the other develops. Managers focus on systems, structure and routine, while leaders focus on people. One controls, while the other inspires trust; one accepts the status quo and does things right, while the other challenges the status quo and does the right thing. Murray, 2010). Nevertheless, both these roles overlap and should not be separated. Like leaders, managers also have the ability to influence a group of individuals to meet their shared goals. Management combined with leadership can help achieve a planned systematic change. These instances describe a manager operating under leadership. On the opposite end, when leaders participate in plann ing, organizing, and staffing, they are operating within management. (Murray, 2010). Leadership combined with management can keep groups and organizations appropriately aligned with its environment. Today we are in a new economy, where the ultimate value lies in our knowledge workers; where management and leadership can no longer be separated in both analysis and practice. In the words of social ecologist, Peter Drucker, with the rise of the knowledge worker, â€Å"one does not ‘manage’ people†¦ The task is to lead people. And the goal is to make productive the specific strengths and knowledge of every individual. † (Murray, 2010). Managers today are not just expected to assign a task, but also to define a purpose. They are not just expected to organize staffing and maximize efficiency, but also to nurture skills, encourage innovation, and inspire results. Managers are expected to become leaders. In conclusion, both management and leadership functions must be connected in order to maximize its effectiveness. As U. S. Navy Admiral, Grace Hopper, pointed out, â€Å"you cannot manage men into battle. You manage things; you lead people. † (1986). â€Å"With the mastery of each of these skills and behaviors, one can successfully navigate the fields of both management and leadership.
